GENERAL INFORMATION

Q: What do I need to do to apply for the competition?
A: Online Application forms can be found HERE. You will be required to provide basic contact information and repertoire selections along with a non-refundable $10 processing fee (payable online by credit/debit card). No recordings are necessary!

Q: What is the application deadline?
A: The application deadline for the 2011 Opera Champion Competition is October 19, 2011.

Q: If I submit my application and pay the processing fee, am I guaranteed an audition?
A: Yes, all applicants are guaranteed auditions on one of the audition dates and times listed.

Q: Can I request an audition on a particular date and time?
A: Yes. Opera Theater will make every effort to honor requested dates and times, however we cannot guarantee to do so, as schedules fill quickly.

Q: I want to audition, but I won't be available for the semi-finals or finals. Am I still eligible to win?
A: All participants must be available for the semi-finals and finals. You must be present at all rounds to be eligible to win.

SCHEDULING

Q: When will I find out my preliminary round audition time?
A: Opera Theater will notify all applicants who apply by October 1 of their scheduled audition time via email no later than October 7, 2011. Applicants who apply after October 1 will be notified via email on a rolling basis.

Q: The audition time I was assigned is no longer good for me. Can I switch to a different time/day?
A: We will make every effort to accommodate participants' requests, but this may not always be possible as schedules can fill quickly. For audition changes, please send an email to rkisic@operatheaterpittsburgh.org

Q: When will I find out if I've made it past the preliminary audition round?
A: Opera Theater will notify you via email no later than October 26, 2011.

Q: I passed the preliminary round. What now?
A: Those contestants who move past the preliminary audition round will compete in the semi-final round on Thursday, October 27 at the Mellon Institute Auditorium, Carnegie Mellon University. 3 Finalists will be selected from these applicants and invited to the final audition gala on Saturday, October 29 at the Mellon Institute Auditorium, Carnegie Mellon University.

Q: How are semi-finalists, finalists and the winner chosen?
A: Video clips from the preliminary audition rounds will be posted online. Semi-finalists will be chosen by online voting through Opera Theater's Facebook page. Be sure to have all your friends vote for you! 3 Finalists will be selected by a panel of Opera Theater judges on Thursday, October 27. The winner will be chosen by audience acclaim at the live competition finals on Saturday, October 29.

AUDITIONS

Q: What should I sing?
A: You are required to prepare one aria (must be from an opera) and one song in English or a language of your choice.

Q: Can I hold my music at auditions?
A: No, all music must be memorized.

Q: How early should I arrive to my audition?
A: Plan to arrive at least 15min prior to your scheduled time. You will need to check in with the monitor at your location.

Q: Will there be a place where I can warm-up and get ready?
A: You should arrive ready to sing. Depending on location, there may or may not be warm-up space available; check with the on-site monitor for details.

Q: What should I bring to my audition?
A: Please bring a clean copy of your music, in a 3-ring binder, for the accompanist. This should be in the correct key for you (no transposition will be provided), and must be a fully notated piano accompaniment (key charts are not sufficient).

Q: Can I perform with recorded music?
A: Yes, though Opera Theater will provide an accompanist for all auditions. Please note - if you are selected as a finalist, you will be required to sing with piano.

Q: Can I sing a-cappella?
A: Yes, though Opera Theater will provide an accompanist for all auditions. Please note - if you are selected as a finalist, you must sing with piano accompaniment.
